How to Prepare for Postpartum Before Your Baby Is Born
As your due date approaches, it's easy to focus on preparing for birth. The nursery comes together, tiny clothes are washed, and the hospital bag is packed.
But one of the greatest gifts you can give yourself is preparing for what comes after.
The weeks following birth are unlike any other. They are a time to slow down, heal, and fall in love with the newest member of your family. My hope for every family is that they can create a little nest. A love bubble where the outside world can wait, and your only job is to rest, recover, and simply be together.
A little preparation before baby arrives can help make that possible.
Create a Nest
Think about what will make your days feel calm and comfortable.
Set up a basket beside your favourite chair with snacks, a large water bottle, lip balm, phone charger, burp cloths, and anything else you reach for often.
One of my favourite practical tips is installing an inexpensive bidet attachment before baby arrives. In those first days after birth, it offers gentle cleansing without having to remember to fill a peri bottle every trip to the bathroom. It's a small change that makes recovery just a little easier.
Pamper Your Future Self
You deserve care, too.
Buy the soft pajamas. Replace the slippers that have seen better days. Fill your freezer with meals you genuinely enjoy. Pick up your favourite tea or coffee.
These small comforts become part of the nest you're creating. They remind you that caring for yourself is part of caring for your baby.
Let Your Village Care for You
When people ask how they can help, let them.
Ask someone to drop off dinner, walk the dog, fold a basket of laundry, or hold the baby while you enjoy a hot shower.
Every meal delivered, every errand run, and every load of laundry folded helps protect that love bubble you've created around your family.
Partners Help Hold the Nest Together
Partners play such an important role during postpartum.
Sometimes support looks like bringing a fresh cup of coffee before a feeding, keeping snacks and water close by, changing diapers, or quietly taking care of the dishes without being asked.
These simple acts say, "I've got us," allowing the birthing parent to focus on healing and bonding with baby.
Build Your Support Team
No one is meant to do postpartum alone.
Family, friends, healthcare providers, lactation consultants, and doulas all have a place in your village.
A doula doesn't replace your partner or your loved ones. We become another steady presence in your family's circle of support. We answer questions, offer reassurance, care for baby while you rest, and help protect the calm you've worked so intentionally to create.
Protect the Bubble
The laundry will still be there.
The dishes can wait.
These first weeks are fleeting.
Give yourself permission to settle into your nest, soak in newborn cuddles, and allow yourself to be cared for, too.
At Natural Rhythm Doula Care, I believe every family deserves to experience postpartum surrounded by support, kindness, and calm. Creating that love bubble is one of the greatest gifts you can give yourself, your partner, and your baby.
